Charles A. Ely
HOOSICK, N.Y. Charles A. Chuck Ely, 65, died July 15, 2003,
at the family camp in Port Henry. He was bom Dec. 5, 1937,
in Bennington, Vt, the son of Geoige and Phyllis (Cantello)
Ely. He graduated from Hoosick Falls High School in 1956.
Mr. Ely was a truck driver most of his adult life, and
retired from Johnson Controls in Bennington after 20 years
of service. He and his wife operated the first Arctic Cat
snowmobile dealership in the early 1970s. They also owned
and operated the Wayside Restaurant in Hoosick and later
the Country Plus Restaurant & Lounge in Pittstown. He
drove stock cars for many years and won many feature
events, which earned him a place in the Lebanon Valley
Speedway Hall of Fame and the NYSSCA Hall of Fame. He
enjoyed leather-making, sign painting, and building and
flying remote-controlled airplanes. Survivors include his
wife, Jo Ann; a daughter, Stacey Pratt; four sons, Donald
Ely of Bennington, Vt., Robert Ely and Timothy Ely, both of
Hoosick, and Charles Ely of Pownal, Vt.; three brothers,
George Ely of Fairbanks, Alaska, Walter Ely of Hopewell,
Va., and William Ely of Hoosick; a sister, Mary Hagadorn of
Hoosick; 1 1 grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and
cousins. The funeral service will be held Friday at 10 a.m.
at the Mahar Funeral Home in Hoosick Falls. Burial will
follow in the Hoosick Rural Cemetery. Calling hours will be
held today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial
contributions may be made to a favorite charity.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Mahar Funeral
