George Alva Ely Jr.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska George Alva Ely Jr., 72, died Sept 29, 2004 at the Fairbanks Memorial Hospital. Born June 12, 1932 in Bennington, Vt, he was the first son of George A. and Phyllis S. (Cantello) Ely. George retired after a 20-year career as a U.S. Army non-commissioned officer. He and his beloved wife, Evelyn, settled in the state of Alaska, dividing their time between there and Hoosick, N.Y. George was employed by the Alaska Pipeline Services Company until his second retirement in December 2002. Survivors include his son, George W., and his wife Ann (Marchesani), of Fairbanks and Williamstown, NJ.; grandchildren Delaya Rosenberger, Andrea and Geoffrey and great-grandson Evan Ely Rosenberger; sister Mary L Hagadorn of Hoosick, N.Y.; brothers Walter and his wife Ursula of Hopewell, Va. and William and his wife Ida of Hoosick; sister-in-law Jo Ann Ely of Hoosick; and longtime friend and companion Kathleen Greaves of Fairbanks. George is also survived by many nieces and nephews, all of whom lovingly reciprocated Uncle George's good-natured torments. George is predeceased by both his parents, his wife Evelyn, niece Sandra Ely and his brother Charles A. Ely. Those who knew George loved him dearly and will miss him greatly. He will live on in their hearts and with God. Funeral services will be Thursday, Oct. 7, at 11 a.m. from the Mahar Funeral home, 43 Main St., Hoosick Falls, N.Y. Burial will follow the service at Hoosick Rural Cemetery in Hoosick. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home Thursday morning from 10 a.m. until the start of the service.1
