Kutztown Professor Dies, 64
Dr. Holland L. Boyd, head of the English Department at
Kutztown State Teachers College the last eight years, died
of a heart attack Tuesday night at his home, Fleetwood R.
2, near Kutztown. He was the husband of Jessie (Rogers)
Boyd. He was born 64 years ago in Tennessee, son of the
late Henry and Frances (Bradford) Boyd.
Dr. Boyd was educated in schools of Carroll County.
Tennessee. He received his B. A. degree from Union
University. Jackson, Tenn., and his M. A. and Ph. D.
degrees from George Peabody College, Nashville, Tenn. He
served as principal and teacher in Bruceton, Tenn.; taught
in Cumberland College. Williamsburg, Ky., and was on the
faculty of the University of Georgia, first doing extension
work and later serving as professor in the Department of
English.
Dr. Boyd came to Kutztown in 1947 as a teacher in the
English Department. When Dr. Clyde Lytle became dean, Dr.
Boyd was named to succeed him as head of the department
eight years ago. He was a member of the Masons in
Tennessee, and First Baptist Church, Reading. He is
survived by his wife, a son, John C. Boyd. State College;
three sisters. Mrs. Mary Allen. Memphis, Tenn.; Mrs. Viola
Nolen and Mrs. Vivian Robinson, both of Buena Vista, Tenn.,
and a brother, Robert Boyd, Westport, Tenn. Services will
be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Stump Funeral Home, 117 W. Main
St., Fleetwood.1
