Spurgeon F. Boyd, Union biologist, dies BRADFORD Services
for educator Spurgeon Frank Boyd, 71, former head of the
biology department at Union University, will be at 11 a.m.
Thursday at Hunt Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Elliott
and the Rev. Mike Burczynski officiating. Burial will be in
Prospect Prospect Cemetery near Hollow Rock. Mr. Boyd died
Tuesday at Veterans Administration Hospital in Memphis
after a long illness. He graduated from Central High School
in Bruceton, and received his bachelor's degree from
Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City. He held the
master's degree from Vanderbilt University in Nashville and
had done additional study at the University of Georgia,
Arizona State University and University of Oregon. He also
was a former professor of biology at Belmont College in
Nashville and at Memphis State University before his
retirement in 1978. He served in the 9th Division of the
U.S. Marine Corps in World War II. Mr. Boyd was a member of
the Tennessee Education Association, Retired Teachers'
Association, American Institute of Science and the National
Wildlife Federation. He was a member of the Tennessee
Academy of Science, American Association for the
Advancement of Science, Association of University
Professors, and Beta biological society. He was a lesson
writer for the children's division of the Baptist Sunday
School Board, and was a deacon and Sunday School teacher at
First Baptist Church. He leaves his wife, Mrs Pauline Boyd
of Bradford; a daughter, Mrs. Don Steen of Corinth, Miss.;
a son. Dr. Thomas Boyd of Baldwin City, Kan.; a sister,
Mrs. Frank Fristoe of Bruceton; and two grandchildren,
Chris Boyd and Sally Steen.4
