Thomas was a confederate prisoner (26th Mississippi Infantry) at Fort Delaware when he joined the 3rd Maryland Cavalry USA. He enlisted September 18, 1863 as a private and was promoted to hospital steward August 1, 1864. After the war he filed a claim for property that was taken by the federal army during the war.^{3 1 4 5 6 7}
