Urban fought with the 6th Regiment, Ohio Cavalry during the Civil War. In 1880 Urban and his family were living in Shelby County Tennessee. Urban filed for a pension in 1890, his 2nd wife filed for one in 1925. Urban was living with his son Edgar in 1900. His middle name was listed as James.

U. J. GILLETTE Urban Joel Gillette, 80 years of age, of 440 South Washington, passed away yesterday. He is survived by a wife, Elnora R. Gillette, and eight grandchildren, three of whom reside in California. They are Vivian Gillette, Edwin Gillette, and Mrs. Allen Fabes, all of Montebello. The funeral will be held from the White-Emerson chapel tonight at 7 oclock. The body will be sent to Fayetteville, Ark., for interment. Rev. Oliver will officiate at the services.^{10 3 11 5 12}
