WILLIAM HARVEY BOYD PASSES AWAY ON COAST
Was a Pioneer of Lower Coast
On Tuesday, September 7, 1915, William Harvey Boyd, at his
home near Annapolis, Sonoma County, where he has lived for
over 43 years, passed over to the great beyond. Mr. Boyd
was born in Carrol county, Tennessee, on August 20, 1831,
and lived there until 20 years of age then he went to
Mississippi to oversee a cotton plantation, but becoming
dissatisfied with driving Negroes, he went to New Madrid,
Missouri, from which place he came to California in May,
1854, crossing the plains with an ox-team and reaching the
state in September. The spring following he went to the
gold mines near Jackson, Amador county, and not being very
successful he then went to drive a mule team for the
Calaveras Lumber Company In Amador and remained there for
four years. He then went to Sutter Creek working in a store
as clerk for the late Alvinzo Heywood, where he was engaged
in mining at that place, and was there married to Martha E.
Rice on August 19, 1860. Mr. Boyd, in 1861, moved to Hick's
valley, Marin county, and became overseer of Alvinzo
Heywood's cattle ranch, remaining there until the fall of
1865, and in 1866 he moved to the Sonoma mountains locating
on the home place in 1870, where he has lived continuously
ever since. Mr. Boyd leaves one brother, Martin P. Boyd, of
Cottage Home, Tennessee, who is now the sole survivor of a
family of 7 boys and 5 girls. Mrs. Boyd passed away on May
2, 1911, and there remain to mourn his departure three
children and six grandchildren. The children are Mrs. Emma
S. Fisk, of Oakland, Mrs. Ella O. McMillen, of Fish Rock,
Mendocino couny, and J. D. Boyd, of Annapolis. Deceased was
buried on Thursday afternoon in the Annapolis cemetery A
large congregation assembled. Rev. Duncan Munro conducted
religious services and Mr. G. W. Fiscus and Mr. John Ohlson
and his four stalwart sons, Elmer, Ernest, Ed J. and
Chester Ohlson were pall bearers.2
