Frances fought with the 2nd Tennessee Mounted Infantry USA during the Civil War. He enlisted 1 August 1864 at Johnsonville, Tennessee for one year. He was mustered in at Nashville Tennessee and mustered out on 27 June 1865. He filed and received an invalid pension in 1892.5 6 7
