Oswald was a bugler with 6th Illinois Cavalry during the Civil War. He was shot in the left arm. He received a medical discharge 08/27/1863 in Germantown Tennessee. He re-enlisted 03/06/1865 in the same unit and was mustered out 11/05/1865.^{4 2 5 6 7}
